Bootfitting Built for Better Days on the Mountain
A proper boot fit changes everything. More comfort, more control, less foot pain, and longer days on the hill.
At Ballistyx, our bootfitting process is built around your feet, your riding style, and the way you actually move in your boots. Through years of experience and thousands of boot fits, we have honed our process to help customers find the right balance between control and comfort.
Great Riding Starts With the Right Fit
Snowboard boots are the first point of contact between your body and your board, making them one of the most important parts of your entire setup.
Too loose and you lose response, risk your foot floating around inside the boot, and leave yourself open to a whole list of other problems. Too tight and your feet will be screaming at you, ending your day before lunch.
The right fit should feel secure, supportive, and dialled in without cutting off circulation or creating pressure points. Like a second skin, or a hug from your mum after a long absence.
Our bootfitters take the time to assess your foot shape, experience level, riding goals, past boot issues, and the gear you’re using. From there, we help match you with the right boot, then fine-tune the fit so you can get the most out of your riding experience.
Why Bootfitting Matters
Comfort Is Performance
A good boot fit is not just about avoiding sore feet. It affects how quickly your board responds, how stable you feel, and how much energy you burn throughout the day.
Poorly fitted boots can lead to:
- Heel lift
- Toe bang
- Numbness
- Arch pain
- Pressure points
- Cramping
- Lack of board response
- Boots packing out too quickly
A proper bootfit solves these issues before they ruin your trip.
Not in Melbourne? We’ll Do Our Best to Help
We’ll be honest: the best snowboard bootfit happens in-store, with a trained bootfitter assessing your feet, your stance, and the way the boot interacts with your anatomy.
But Australia is massive, and reliable snowboard shops are few and far between. If buying snowboard boots online is your only realistic option, we’ll do our best to help you make an informed choice.
It is not the same as an in-store fitting, and we will never pretend it is. But it is better than guessing from your street shoe size and hoping the snowboard gods are feeling generous.
The goal is simple: help you avoid the obvious mistakes and give you the best chance of getting into a boot that makes sense for your feet and your riding.

Our Bootfitting Process
1. We Start With Your Feet
We look at your feet, warts and all. Our bootfitters assess your naked foot, paying close attention to length, width, volume, arch shape, ankle range of movement, pressure areas, pre-existing conditions, and any previous fit issues.
Don’t be shy — this is a socks-off affair. The more we understand your feet, the better we can fit your boots.
2. We Talk About Your Riding
Beginner, park rat, freeride weapon, weekend cruiser, or full-send holiday warrior — your riding style changes what boot will work best.
Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan — different destinations, conditions, and riding goals all matter. We fit boots for real-world results, and to do that properly, we get to know you as a snowboarder.
3. We Match the Right Boot
Not every boot fits every foot. We narrow down the best options based on shape, flex, lacing system, liner, support, and overall feel.
Just because a boot fits your mate perfectly does not mean it will work for your feet. At Ballistyx, we prioritise fit over form and function over fashion. That said, we do believe in the old adage: look good, feel good, ride good.
During bootfitting, we ask customers to come in with an open mind so we can weave our magic and get you set up in the best possible option for your anatomy.
4. We Customise the Fit
The idea that snowboard boots fit perfectly straight out of the box is an outdated one. Snowboard boots are performance sporting equipment, built to handle the rigours of flying down the side of a mountain at speeds faster than driving through a school zone at pickup time.
Depending on the boot and your needs, we may need to make adjustments to dial in the fit. This may include heat moulding, insole support, liner adjustments, volume tweaks, or targeted pressure relief.
5. We Make Sure It Feels Right
Buying boots at Ballistyx is the start of a friendship, not a one-sided transaction.
We’ll work with you to make your boots the best they can be. If that means tweaks and adjustments across a few sessions, we are happy to see you back in-store.
A boot should feel snug and secure, not sloppy, painful, or vague. We’ll work with you to achieve the best possible fit we can, so you can ride with more comfort, control, and confidence.
Bootfitting Services
New Boot Fit Consultation
Come in for an assessment and get matched with the right snowboard boot for your feet, riding style, and setup.
We’ll look at your foot shape, talk through your riding, and help narrow down the best options so you’re not guessing your way through one of the most important purchases in snowboarding.
Heat Moulding
Help your liners shape more closely to your feet for improved comfort, hold, and overall fit. Heat moulding can help skip the break-in period and allows us to make key adjustments so your boots feel better, faster.
Heat moulding is free when you buy your boots from Ballistyx. If your boots were purchased elsewhere, this is a chargeable service.
Custom Footbeds / Insoles
Add support, improve alignment, reduce fatigue, and create a more stable platform inside your boot.
Custom footbeds are the gold standard — the Rolls-Royce of bootfitting experiences. Our custom insoles provide a level of support that stock footbeds and standard drop-ins simply cannot match.
If you want custom footbeds created by snowboarders, specifically for the movements and demands of snowboarding, book an appointment and let’s get to work.
Fit Adjustments
Pressure points, heel lift, toe bang, arch pain, hot spots, and volume issues — we’ll help troubleshoot the problem.
No matter if you purchased your boots from us or another retailer, we’re here to help. Fit adjustments made to boots purchased at Ballistyx are part of the service. We do not charge for our time, although any consumables needed to complete the job are billable.
If you purchased your boots elsewhere and need them fixed, we can still help. This is a chargeable service, but hey — next time buy boots from us and save money while getting a better result.
Existing Boot Assessment
Already own boots but not sure they’re right? Bring them in and we’ll assess your feet, check the fit of your boots, and give you an honest read on what’s going on.
We’ll provide a clear, unbiased situation assessment based on what we see in front of us — no scare tactics, no fluff, just proper advice from snowboarders who care and fit boots every day.
The Right Boot Matters
A great bootfit is not about forcing your foot into the fanciest boot on the wall. It is about matching the right snowboard boot to the right foot, then doing the work to make that fit as good as it can be.
Different boots fit different feet. Liners, shell shapes, flex, volume, heel hold, toe box shape, and lacing systems all change how a boot feels and performs.
That is why we ask customers to come in with an open mind. The boot you thought you wanted might not be the boot your feet are asking for. Our job is to help you find the best option for your anatomy, riding style, and setup.
At Ballistyx, we fit from a carefully selected range of snowboard boots we know, trust, and ride. We pay attention to how they fit out of the box, how they break in, how they hold the heel, and how they perform once you get them on the hill.
Who It’s For
New Riders, Seasoned Riders, and Sore-Foot Survivors
Bootfitting is for anyone who wants their boots to work better. You do not need to be an expert rider to benefit from a proper fit. Proper fit increases control, comfort and combats fatigue. Less fatigue means longer days on the hill, better performance and quicker progression. All good outcomes if you ask us!
It is especially helpful if:
- You are buying your first pair of snowboard boots
- You have wide, narrow, high-volume, or low-volume feet
- You get numb toes or foot cramps
- Your heels lift when riding
- You are heading overseas and want your boots sorted before the trip
- You have had bad boot experiences in the past
- You want better response and board feel
Ballistyx Difference
Fitted by Snowboarders Who Like Feet, Not Guesswork
We ride, we test gear, and we understand what boots need to do on the mountain. Our goal is not to rush you into a box, push a quick purchase, and send you out the door. It is to help you find the boot that fits properly, supports your riding, and gives you the best chance of enjoying every lap.
This process takes a bit of time, and sometimes solving the riddle can take a bit of back and forth. We relish the challenge and love to hear feedback, no matter what the outcome.
At Ballistyx, bootfitting is part product knowledge, part experience, and part listening properly. Getting this right is almost a dark art that comes from years of experience and a dedication to solving people’s podiatry problems.
Led by Head Bootfitter Andy T
Experience You Can Feel in Your Boots
Head bootfitter Andy T has spent years fitting snowboard boots, building custom insoles, and helping riders solve the weird and wonderful fit problems that only show up once your feet are locked inside a snowboard boot.
Before building the Ballistyx bootfitting program, Andy previously ran the boot program at one of Australia’s largest snowboard retailers, working through everything from first-time boot fits to complex foot shapes, pressure points, heel lift, numb toes, arch pain, and custom footbed builds.
Andy has completed training in both major custom insole systems used across snowboard and ski bootfitting, including Sidas and Masterfit. That background gives our process a strong foundation in foot assessment, support, alignment, volume management, and snowboard-specific fit outcomes.
Over thousands of boot fits, we have honed the Ballistyx process to find the right balance between comfort, control, support, and real-world performance on the hill.
Bootfitting appointments at Ballistyx are guided by this process. Andy leads the program, but it is not a one-person magic trick. Our crew are trained in the Ballistyx approach so customers get consistent, thoughtful, and properly considered advice across the shop.
We are constantly refining how we fit boots as new models, liners, shapes, lacing systems, materials, and fit profiles change. Snowboard boots keep evolving, so our process does too.
Getting this right is almost a dark art — part product knowledge, part pattern recognition, and part dedication to solving people’s peculiar podiatry puzzles before they ruin a perfectly good snow trip.

“Went in with a mate who was looking to get his boots fitted, Lachie gave excellent advice and help.
Helped my mate get the right foot beds as well has talking him through the heat molding process. Really great service”

Tash Cullins — Google Review
“While I was there, we realised one of my snowboard boots that I bought it Canada is actually a full size smaller than the other (??), which totally explained why I’d been in so much pain riding – ankles, top of my foot, toes, all of it. Andy was amazing – he heat moulded the boot and came up with a bunch of ways to fix the problem. Seriously so helpful and patient.
I rode for the first time this weekend with my newly moulded boots and seriously what a difference. Literally barely any pain compared to before! It honestly changed my whole day on the mountain I didn’t even think about it once while riding and I’m so grateful!!”

Got questions before you come in? Good. Snowboard boots are one of the most important parts of your setup, and getting the fit right matters. Here are the answers to the bootfitting questions we hear most often in-store.
Snowboard Bootfitting FAQ
Do I need to book a snowboard bootfitting appointment?
Bookings are recommended if you have particularly problematic feet or you’re chasing the gold standard of snowboard bootfitting. This may involve drop-in footbeds, custom insoles, and a level of adjustment that takes some extra time.
If you’re looking for your first pair of boots or upgrading your current setup, bookings are not essential. That said, it’s always worth checking if the Boot Wizard is on deck and available.
Need an upgrade? Buying your first set of boots? Walk right in and we’ll get you sorted.
Do you offer snowboard bootfitting in Melbourne?
Yes. Ballistyx offers snowboard bootfitting in Melbourne for riders heading to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Europe, and anywhere else snowboards are allowed to make bad decisions look fun.
Come in-store, get properly assessed, and leave with boots fitted for your feet, your riding, and your next trip.
Are snowboard boots the same size as street shoes?
No, not always. Snowboard boots and street shoes are commonly different sizes, so don’t be surprised if one of our bootfitters starts you in a snowboard boot a full size smaller than your everyday shoes.
The reason is simple: street shoes are built for comfort, while snowboard boots are built for control. Snowboard boots are a high-performance piece of equipment that help you strap yourself to a plank of wood, plastic, and steel, then hurl yourself down the side of a mountain.
A proper snowboard boot fit should feel snug, secure, and responsive. If we fit you the same way you buy sneakers, there’s a good chance your boots will pack out, your foot will move around, and your board response will suffer.
Should snowboard boots feel tight at first?
Yes, snowboard boots should feel snug at first. Your toes may lightly push against the front of the boot while standing upright.
At Ballistyx, we work on the premise that in the shop, your boots are the smallest and stiffest they will ever be. Boots break in, liners compress, materials soften, and the fit will change with time on the hill.
We fit boots in your riding stance: fully stacked, knees bent, bum over heels, knees over toes. When you push your knees forward and load up the tongue of the boot with your shins, your feet will pull back slightly in the boot, leaving your toes lightly grazing the front.
They should feel firm, secure, and supportive. They should not feel painfully tight, cut off circulation, or cause numbness.
Can you fix snowboard boots I already own?
In many cases, yes. Bring them in and we’ll assess your feet, then check the fit, liner, shell shape, and footbed.
Once we identify the issue, we’ll talk you through your options and help you work out if the problem is fixable or terminal. If we think a fix would be like putting a Band-Aid on a firehose, we’ll explain our trepidation and recommend a better solution.
Do I need custom footbeds for snowboard boots?
Custom footbeds are the gold standard. They provide support that matches your unique foot shape and create a stronger, more stable platform inside your boot.
The outcome is better alignment, improved comfort, reduced fatigue, and more control through your board. Stock footbeds are usually flat, flimsy, and built to suit everyone, which means they rarely support anyone properly.
If you want the best possible bootfit, custom footbeds are one of the biggest upgrades you can make.
Can you fit snowboard boots online?
Not properly, no.
A true snowboard bootfit happens in-store, with a trained bootfitter assessing your feet, your stance, your movement, and how the boot fits around your actual anatomy.
That said, we understand that Australia is huge and not everyone lives near a proper snowboard shop. If buying snowboard boots online is your only realistic option, we can offer fit guidance to help you make a more informed choice.
We may ask for foot measurements, photos, fit history, riding style, destination, current boot size, and any issues you have had in the past. It is not the same as an in-store bootfit, but it is better than guessing.
How long does a snowboard bootfit take?
We’ll assess your feet, recommend a few boots that suit your shape and riding needs, then get your feet into each option before settling on the winner. Our process is one of elimination, and we don’t like to skip the steps.
A proper bootfit takes time, but it’s worth it when your boots feel better, ride better, and give you more confidence on the mountain.
